About the Character Counter
This free character counter tells you instantly whether your text fits where it needs to go. As you type, it shows live progress against the real limits for X/Twitter posts, SMS messages, SEO titles and meta descriptions, and social captions — green while you're inside the limit, red once you're over.
It counts in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and there's no signup.
Limits it checks
- SEO title tag — around 60 characters before Google truncates it.
- Meta description — around 155 characters.
- SMS — 160 characters per part, or just 70 if you include an emoji or accent.
- X / Twitter — 280 characters.
- Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook captions.
Why emoji shorten an SMS
Plain SMS uses a compact 7-bit alphabet that fits 160 characters per message. The moment you include a character outside it — an emoji, or often an accented letter — the whole message switches to Unicode encoding, which only fits 70 characters per part. That's why one emoji can suddenly turn a single message into two, and double what it costs to send.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters is a tweet?
X/Twitter allows 280 characters for a standard post. This counter shows your usage against that limit live as you type.
How long should a meta description be?
Around 155 characters. Google truncates longer descriptions in results, so the key message should come first.
Why does my SMS count drop to 70 characters?
Adding an emoji or certain accented characters forces the message into Unicode encoding, which fits 70 characters per part instead of 160.
Does it count spaces?
Yes — the main count includes spaces, since that's how platforms count. A separate figure without spaces is also shown.
