How to Compress an Image Without Losing Quality

Photos are large because they store fine detail your eye barely notices. The good news: you can cut a file dramatically — for email, uploads or faster pages — with little or no visible loss, and without uploading it anywhere.

Lossy vs lossless

Lossy formats (JPG, WebP) discard some detail to save space and let you choose how aggressively; lossless formats (PNG) keep every pixel. For photos, lossy at a sensible quality wins on size by a wide margin.

The quality sweet spot

  • Start at 70–80% quality and lower it until you can just notice a difference, then step back up.
  • Choose WebP for the smallest file — convert with the Image Converter.
