Resizing without distortion
An image has an aspect ratio — the relationship between its width and height. If you change one side without the other, the picture stretches or squashes. Locking the aspect ratio means setting the width automatically sets the matching height (and vice versa), so the image scales cleanly. Unlock it only when you deliberately want to change the proportions.
A worked example
A 4000 × 3000 photo has a 4:3 ratio. Set the width to 800 with the aspect locked and the height becomes 600 automatically, keeping it 4:3. Resizing down like this is also one of the most effective ways to reduce file size, since a smaller image simply has fewer pixels to store.

How do I resize an image to specific dimensions?

Will resizing distort my image?
Not if you keep the aspect ratio locked — the tool scales both sides together. Unlocking it lets you set width and height independently, which can stretch the picture.
