Cropping removes the parts of an image outside your selection, changing the composition and often the aspect ratio. Choosing a preset like 1:1 (square, for profile pictures), 16:9 (widescreen) or 9:16 (stories) keeps the crop box locked to that shape as you drag, so the result fits the place you're using it without further adjustment.
How to get a clean crop
