Rotating vs flipping
Rotating turns the whole image around its centre — useful when a photo was taken sideways and shows up in the wrong orientation. Flipping (mirroring) reflects it, swapping left and right or top and bottom, which is handy for correcting selfies that came out reversed or for creating a mirrored version. You can combine rotation and flips to reach any orientation.
Why a photo looks rotated
Cameras and phones often store a photo in one orientation and add an EXIF tag telling apps to display it rotated. Some apps ignore that tag, so the image looks sideways. Rotating it here bakes the correct orientation into the pixels themselves, so it appears the right way up everywhere.
