How percentile is calculated
Percentile is the percentage of candidates who scored below you. From your rank, it's (total candidates − your rank) ÷ total candidates × 100. So rank 1 out of 100 is the 99th percentile, and the last rank is the 0th percentile. It measures your position relative to everyone else, which is why it's used to compare results across exams of different difficulty.
Percentile is not percentage
These two are easy to confuse. Your percentage of marks is how much you scored out of the maximum, while your percentile is how you ranked against other candidates. You can score 80% and still have a modest percentile if many others also scored high, or score less but rank well if the paper was hard.
