How PPF grows

PPF is a government-backed savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in. Each yearly deposit earns interest that is compounded annually, and because interest is added to the balance every year, the corpus grows faster in the later years. Deposits, interest and maturity are all tax-free under the EEE (exempt-exempt-exempt) regime, which makes the effective return higher than the headline rate for a taxpayer.

A worked example

Deposit the maximum ₹1,50,000 a year at 7.1% for 15 years. You invest ₹22,50,000 in total, and with annual compounding the maturity value works out to roughly ₹40.68 lakh — so about ₹18.18 lakh is tax-free interest. Depositing early in the financial year earns a full year of interest, which is why April deposits are common.

Frequently asked questions

How is PPF maturity calculated?

Each yearly deposit is compounded annually at the PPF rate until the 15-year tenure ends. This tool sums the grown value of every deposit to give the maturity amount and the interest earned.

What is the current PPF interest rate?

The government sets the PPF rate and revises it quarterly; it has recently been 7.1%. Enter the current rate in the calculator, since it can change.

Is PPF tax-free?

Yes. PPF follows the EEE regime — your deposits qualify for a deduction, and the interest and maturity amount are fully tax-free. That makes the effective return attractive for taxpayers.

What is the PPF deposit limit?

You can deposit between ₹500 and ₹1.5 lakh per financial year. Deposits above ₹1.5 lakh don't earn interest, so the calculator is most useful up to that limit.

Is my data uploaded?
