About the Final Grade Calculator

Wondering what you need to score on the final exam to pass, or to hit a target grade? This free final grade calculator tells you exactly. Enter your current grade, the grade you're aiming for, and how much the final is worth.

It runs in your browser and flags when a target simply isn't reachable from the final alone.

How it works

Your overall grade is your current grade for everything except the final, plus the final scaled by its weight. Rearranging that gives the score you need on the final to reach your target. The calculator does the algebra and also handles the edge cases — telling you when you've already secured your target, or when the target is out of reach even with a perfect final.

A worked example

You currently sit at 70%, you want an 80% overall, and the final is worth 40% of the grade. The other 60% is locked in at 70, contributing 42 points. To reach 80 you need 38 more points from the final's 40% slice, so you need 38 ÷ 0.40 = 95% on the final. If instead the final were worth 50%, the same target would need only 82.5% — the more the final counts, the more a single strong exam can move your grade.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Enter your current grade, your target overall grade, and the final's weight. The tool computes the score you need on the final, accounting for how much it counts toward the total.

What if the needed score is over 100%?

Then the target isn't achievable from the final alone — the calculator flags this so you can set a realistic goal or look at other assessments.

What if I only need to pass?

Set your target to your pass mark (often 40%). The tool shows the minimum you need on the final — and if that number is 0 or negative, you've already passed regardless of the final.

What is 'current grade'?

It's your weighted average across everything graded so far, excluding the final. If your course tracks this for you, use that number.

Is my data private?

Yes — the calculation happens entirely in your browser.
